Everything at USC is under scrutiny right now as the Trojans look disorganized and sloppy on a weekly basis.
But there is also a stubborness that is not helping the program.
Here is what an NFL scout who has attended practice the past two seasons said:
"Clancy Pendergast has no feel for defensive backfield play. He always exposes his cornerbacks. It's easy to throw the ball when the corners have no help.
"He also stays in the same defense too often. Utah ran several plays twice because they knew.
"When you go to practice, the defensive linemen run poor drills. They take poor gaps on plays.
"The defense takes poor angles and overruns plays in practice."
How does any of this get fixed?
It is a foundation of the program.
It will not change until coaching changes are made.
