Monday Whispers: A Potential USC Coaching Replacement Plan

Monday Whispers: A Potential USC Coaching Replacement Plan

Within minutes of USC’s loss to Arizona State, I began hearing a possible plan regarding a replacement for Trojans coach Clay Helton.

This is being discussed within the athletic dept. and has also been heard in coaching circles.

Pete Carroll would step down as coach of the Seattle Seahawks and return to USC as head coach BUT also have a title as athletic director in charge of football.

Carroll’s intention would be to coach only a few seasons and then personally hire his successor.

The theory is this would appeal to the Board of Trustees/administration because Carroll at least knows football and would be able to hire a good replacement.

Do I think it will happen? I would not bet on it.

But I know this: Nobody is better or more interested in coaching moves than Carroll and if he wanted to return, he would work the phones endlessly to convince Lynn Swann (and some Board of Trustees) to hire him.

And the clamor to replace Clay Helton is getting louder by the week.
