Tuesday Whispers: The Crazy View Inside The McKay Center
The McKay Center is a circus today with everyone in survival mode after Clay Helton fired Neil Callaway and stripped Tee Martin of playcalling duties. Here is an exclusive behind-the-scenes view of the situation:
Tee Martin is naturally furious. This only underscores the fractured view between Helton and Martin.
Although Helton is viewed as Mr. Nice Guy, he has been ruthless with Martin, letting him take all the blame for the playcalling even though Helton calls plays too. Now by announcing he will call plays, Helton is making it look like he will rescue the offense from Martin’s incompetence.
Although the players love Helton, some coaches view him as a backstabber.
Sources said Helton fired Callaway on his own, without athletic director Lynn Swann’s input, because he knew Callaway was retiring anyways after the season.
This also demonstrated Helton’s ruthless side that is rarely seen in public.
All these moves were done to save Helton’s job. But these moves are merely window dressing and what difference can they make in the final month?
UPDATED: Here is Helton’s ridiculous recap of Martin’s reaction to being demoted.
"He was great. He totally understood it was something I wanted to do, as he told me, ‘Coach, I’m here to help you. I love ‘SC. I want to be at ‘SC. It’ll give me an even better opportunity to be an even better receiver coach and recruiter.’ ‘‘
