Wednesday Whispers: Why Was Levi Jones Dismissed?
USC coach Clay Helton would not say why sophomore linebacker Levi Jones was dismissed from the team Tuesday but it was not because Jones was arrested last July for public intoxication.
Sources said Jones was suspended for the Cal game because of the theft of an electric scooter. Fellow linebacker Raymond Scott, a friend of Jones, was also suspended although sources said he was not involved in any thefts.
Was the scooter incident and earlier arrest grounds for dismissal? Frankly, other players did worse last season and remained on the team.
But there is a new power dynamic at USC. It feels like this was something Lynn Swann did as a show of discipline. It doesn’t feel like a Helton move. He is too busy letting the players do whatever they want.
Jones was a promising player so Helton wanted to keep him. Swann is getting tired of hearing about players running amok. Last season, wide receiver Joseph Lewis had several incidents with little retribution before he was eventually arrested.
But things are a little different now. USC is 5-5. Swann has the power. Not Helton.
