Friday Whispers: A USC Coach Puts Feelers Out To NFL
Everyone knows Tee Martin is out his way out at USC after the season but people often wonder who else might be leaving?
One coach is trying to leave but rarely is the first candidate mentioned.
NFL sources said USC defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast has made it known to some colleagues that he is not happy and wants to coach pro football. The problem is the NFL seems to have little interest.
“He wants to an NFL job but there is little interest,” an NFL assistant coach said. “He should probably be happy where he is.”
Pendergast’s critics complain that he rarely makes adjustments and leaves cornerbacks exposed in constant man-to-man coverage. These tactics do not appeal to NFL head coaches, who want more sophisticated schemes.
The best thing Pendergast has going for him is Helton lets him do whatever he wants.
