USC Tells Support Group That Clay Helton Will Return; Real Or Smokescreen?
Some members of an athletic dept. support group were informed Tuesday by USC official that Clay Helton would return for the 2019 season.
Now the question is whether this should be believed?
I have no doubt athletic director Lynn Swann is incompetent enough to bring Helton back. It would eliminate him making a tough decision, namely hiring a football coach. Swann does not want to be accountable.
But I still think it’s too early to think any final decisions have been made before the Notre Dame game. What if USC loses to the Irish, 38-7? Can Swann ignore that and bring Helton back? Can Swann ignore season-ticket sales for next season?
Swann has told people he knows there is no discipline within the football program. He knows if Helton returns there is no chance of discipline improving.
Does Swann care? Some who know him think he only cares about getting paid at USC.
So maybe he is putting out some test balloons to say Helton will return and gauging reaction. One of the support group members I spoke to was disappointed when he heard Helton would return.
“I didn’t expect that,” he said.
We will have to wait and see if this remains true next week.
