Which USC Coaches Will Get Fired?
Wide receiver Kyle Ford of Orange Lutheran was visited by several assistant coaches today: Tee Martin, Brian Ellis, John Baxter and Keary Colbert.
But who will even be back?
Martin has been a zombie coach since getting demoted and has to go elsewhere.
Baxter has been rumored since last season to become more of an administrator and is a strong candidate to stop coaching so some else can handle special teams. Joe DeForest, who is an analyst, handled special teams at Kansas.
Ellis is 30 years old and no one other than Helton wanted him to take the quarterbacks job. Norv Turner, the former Chargers head coach, wanted the job and Helton would not return his phone call. Ellis is a prime candidate for replacement.
Colbert is a former USC player and coaches tight ends. He is the most likely to return because he at least is a Trojan and knows what the Pete Carroll era was like. Plus he doesn’t exactly handle a vital coaching position so why replace him?
Now let’s look at the defense: Clancy Pendergast is a polarizing figure within the athletic dept. He has supporters and detractors. He also does not recruit. Lynn Swann knows he needs to be replaced but Helton wants to keep him. You will know who wins that battle by what happens to Pendergast.
Johnny Nansen is primarily a recruiter. He could survive but if Swann demands a total culture change Nansen could be in trouble.
Ronnie Bradford is a Pendergast hire. The cornerbacks have been spotty the past few seasons. He would seem likely to depart.
And then there is strength coach Ivan Lewis. If he stays, there is apetite for real change.
