Monday Whispers: Key Performer Might Not Return
USC coach Clay Helton is coming back but at least one key performer from this season might not be back to try and save Helton’s job next season.
According to some USC players, wide receiver Tyler Vaughns might turn pro. Vaughns caught 58 passes for 674 yards, the second-most receptions on the team.
But there is feeling among some receivers that with JT Daniels entrenched as the starting quarterback under Helton, Amon-Ra St. Brown will receive even more opportunities next season.
It’s no secret Daniels favors St. Brown, who had a team-leading 60 receptions this season. That is one reason some receivers wanted Jack Sears to start after the Arizona State game.
The odds of Sears starting are remote now that Helton is back next season. Helton has rebuffed player suggestions to bench Daniels.
Wide receiver Michael Pittman could also turn pro but he said he is currently planning to return.
