Tuesday Whispers: Details On Lynn Swann's Plan To Bring Back Clay Helton
Sources say Lynn Swann’s statement on Clay Helton’s return was constructed last Monday and not officially released until Sunday in case the athletic director needed to tweak it based on the final outcome of the USC-Notre Dame game.
The fact the statement was a week old explained why Helton was so confident during his Saturday night press conference about his future. Helton even mentioned Swann would release a statement.
Even if USC lost to Notre Dame, 55-0, Swann would release the statement, sources said. The only reason it was held was in case the Trojans upset the Irish. Swann then would talk about how the victory was a sign of success for next season. But USC lost.
Swann allowed some people to know Helton was coming back. Last Tuesday, a USC official then informed various boosters, including a Board of Directors, a booster group that is loyal to the ahletic dept.
All of this pours water on the idea USC might hire Penn State coach James Franklin or former USC star linebacker Jack Del Rio.
Swann wanted the path of least resistance: Keep Helton, fire some assistants, don’t bother the Board of Trustees or interim school president Wanda Austin. And don’t miss any tee times.
