Monday Whispers: Backstabbing Comes In All Forms

Monday Whispers: Backstabbing Comes In All Forms

Why isn’t USC more successful this season? Look no further than this example of the massive amount of mistrust that exists within the program and was even discussed on the team’s flight back from Oregon State.

For two months, offensive coordinator Tee Martin asked USC coach Clay Helton to speed up the tempo of practices and the offense. Helton refused.

Then on Monday, after he demoted Martin, Helton suddenly announced he would speed up practices and the offense. The coaches were stunned by the timing of it.

“It was totally done to humiliate Tee Martin,” one source said.

Helton even confirmed the change Sunday night with reporters. Here is what Helton said about his game plan against Oregon State.

"Went into the game at the beginning of the week that we'd use tempo, stay in personnel group. That's just my style. I wanted to be able to play fast this week."

His style? Why did Helton suddenly decide to do it now? USC could have played fast at any point this season.

Helton acts like he was offensive coordinator and Martin was the head coach for the first two months.

Is there any other way for Martin to take all this other than Helton sticking it to his offensive coordinator? Don’t think other members of the coaching staff don’t see it too.

It is why few trust Helton even though he has a nice guy image with the public.
