Wednesday Whispers: An Acrimonious Relationship Flies Under Radar
People inside Heritage Hall have their eye on a fractured relationship this week that the public hasn’t heard much about recently.
It is an open secret within the athletic dept. and football program that Clay Helton is despised by Cal coach Justin Wilcox. There is a feeling Wilcox would like to beat USC more than any other team on the Cal schedule.
Remember, Helton fired Wilcox the day after the Pac-12 championship game three years ago. That has not drawn attention from the media but it is a hot topic at USC because word still travels between USC and Cal about hard feelings.
Wilcox can point to the recent demotion of offensive coordinator Tee Martin as an example of Helton’s dual personality. He is Mr. Nice Guy to the public but seen as ready to throw assistant coaches under the bus within coaching circles.
Former USC assistant Peter Sirmon is also Cal’s defensive coordinator but his relationship is better with Helton.
Another former USC assistant, Marques Tuiasosopo, is the quarterbacks coach at Cal. He left USC under odd circumstances. He was briefly the quarterbacks coach but Clay Helton hired his brother, Tyson, as running backs coach.
Everyone knew Tyson, who was quarterbacks coach at Western Kentucky, wanted to coach the quarterbacks. Tuiasosopo soon left for UCLA.
You can bet he would like to beat USC too.
