Thursday Whispers: Who Is Dragging Down USC On Recruiting?
There are a few ugly truths that recruiting services don’t really list about each program. One of them is who is or who is not pulling their weight when it comes to recruiting.
Here are some cold facts: Clancy Pendergast does not recruit. Neil Callaway did not recruit. Ronnie Bradford does not seem to enjoy recruiting. Remember when cornerback Thomas Graham decommitted because he said USC never called him and signed with Oregon? Bradford apologized to Graham.
John Baxter does not recruit. Who else is there?
Bryan Ellis is a 30-year-old untested QB coach. Can he recruit? The jury is out.
Kenechi Udeze makes a lot of visits but his recruiting prowess is an open question.
Johnny Nansen recruits. Tee Martin recruits (at least before his demotion). Keary Colbert can probably recruit but he has a quiet demeanor. Tim Drevno is loud but I’ve never seen recruits gravitate toward him.
Clay Helton? He is getting dissed by recruits like Chris Steele for not developing players.
I write this because Oregon has 12 commits from Southern California. Their previous best was five.
USC’s recruiting class is ranked No. 30. The Trojans always close strong, which is comforting. The concern is this recruiting class does not seem to have a lot of big-time uncommitted prospects. But we will have to see.
If Clay Helton does reorganize his staff after the season, he needs to hire coaches willing to recruit.
