USC Pursues NFL Assistant Coach
USC’s search for a defensive backs coach has taken a turn to the NFL, according to sources.
Clay Helton and Clancy Pendergast have already disagreed over who should be hired to coach the secondary. Last week, Helton wanted to hire Oregon State defensive backs coach Greg Burns but Pendergast was against the move.
Now the Trojans are looking at Cincinnati Bengals secondary coach Daronte Jones.
Why would someone go from the NFL to USC? Because many of the Bengals coaches believe they will be fired after the season.
Jones coached with the Miami Dolphins, Wisconsin, Hawaii and even spent a year at UCLA in 2010.
The big question is whether he will be sufficiently agreeable to Clancy Pendergast, who does not like to be challenged.
