Thursday Whispers: Donors Are Unhappy
USC is facing donor unrest following the football team’s 5-7 record and failure to replace Clay Helton.
Sources say there is also a feeling athletic director Lynn Swann can alienate donors.
In recent weeks, some boosters have inquired about backing out of their Coliseum suite tickets, according to a donor. The suites — and the revenue they generate — are the heart of the stadium renovation. USC was not worried about selling those tickets . . . prior to the football team’s meltdown.
But another problem has been Swann, sources said. He has acted brusquely toward at least three donors, according to sources. One asked for an apology after a rude encounter with Swann and was told by an official it would never happen.
Another was reportedly treated rudely by Swann at a home game and USC officials scrambled to mend fences afterwards. A third wanted to donate money but changed their mind after dealing with Swann’s indifference.
Does any of this matter? Maybe. Maybe not.
But it is yet another sign that USC is a dysfunctional university right now. No full-time president. An awful athletic director. And terrible football coach.
That is no recipe for success.
