Helton: Even with Daniels, we're going to play Fink every week
With the Trojans trailing UNLV 7-6 at the start of the second quarter, the USC coaching staff decided to make a quick quarterback swap.
Out came JT Daniels and in came Matt Fink, at a second and goal from the UNLV eight yard line. After the snap, Fink ran a telegraphed and predicted dive play that was stretched out and dumped for a loss. USC settled for a field goal and a potential 13-7 lead turned into a 9-7 lead.
The swap was a curious one and something USC fans questioned on social media. But Clay Helton says Matt Fink will come in for Daniels throughout the 2018 season.
“Like I said earlier in the week, we were going to use Matt and have a designed package for him each and every week,” Helton said after USC’s 43-21 victory over UNLV. “To have the ability to use his athleticism, it’s something that we put in and something we’ll continue to carry and have a wrinkle in. As good as JT played to day, it’s also great as Amon-Ra (St. Brown) said to have other quarterbacks that can do the job too. And I was proud of Matt for going in there at the end and really controlling a great four minute offense at the end.”
