McGrath named Pac-12 special teams player of the week
An unlikely hero of USC’s 43-21 win over UNLV was sophomore kicker Chase McGrath. McGrath tied a school five record with five field goals to help the Trojans beat a surprisingly tough UNLV squad.
McGrath wasn’t an unlikely hero because of his resume. In fact, he already had a hero moment last year against the Texas Longhorns. He was only an unlikely hero because of the opponent. USC needed all 15 of his points in a 22 point victory over the Rebels. Six of those points came in very tough moments as McGrath nailed kicks field from distances of 46 and 47 yards.
The Pac-12 responded to the performance by naming McGrath the conference’s special team player of the week.
McGrath gives all the credit to his teammates.
“It’s really just a team effort,” McGrath told reporters after his five field goal performance against UNLV. “Wyatt (Schmidt) and Damon (Johnson), my holder and snapper, those guys put so much work in the offseason in training camp. It makes my job so easy. The snap hold is perfect every single time.”
