Helton: Martin calls the offense and he called it last year
Last year, USC beat reporters had a field day questioning whether or not Tee Martin called the offensive plays.
Despite Martin’s title of offensive coordinator, credit seemed to be assigned to Tyson Helton at times, and even Bryan Ellis later on in the season.
Helton was asked about USC's play calling again after Thursdays practice. He made it very clear Tee Martin is in charge of that department.
“Tee’s calling it all,” Helton said after Thursday practice. “He does a good job of as soon as the series is done, we’re chiming in to see what was the defenses, what did we see and let’s make the in game adjustments that we need. We don’t wait until necessarily halftime but at the end of the series, we’re coming up and saying hey they’re doing this front wise, they’re doing this coverage wise, let’s think about these next two, three, four things. But Tee is doing a greta job calling it and I thought he did a great job in game one.”
Helton was then asked if what he said was a change from last year. He again reiterated that Tee Martin was the USC play caller during the 2017 season.
“Last year, Tee called it,” Helton said. “Tyson and I would chime in and I would chime in every once in a while in the red zone. Tyson would chime in on some third downs and do that. But Tee is the play caller. He’s done such a great job over the last three years. He’s taken a lot of pressure off me to be able to run a football team. he’s not only done a great job with the organization of the offense but he’s done a great job in game. He also gives me the honor to bend with me that if I see something and want to be able to make a suggestion that he goes right to it. I appreciate that but at the end of the day, he’s going to always have the final say.”
