Wednesday Whispers: Sports-Minded Donors Want A President
Some of the people that donate six-or-seven figure sums to USC want a new school president.
And they have decided the best choice is Northwestern president Morton Schapiro.
Why? It’s not just because Schapiro was an administrator at USC between 1991-2000. But when he was at USC, he was a fixture on the team plane on football road trips. They believe Schapiro understands football and sports, something you cannot say of a USC president since John Hubbard in the 1970’s.
They like this because they believe Lynn Swann needs a firm boss and oversight. Schapiro is credited with some of Northwestern’s football success and USC could use someone with a plan. Boosters believe he would have a strong voice to get Swann to act more like an athletic director.
An announcement could come in the next 3-6 weeks on a new president.
