Thursday Whispers: A USC Coach Explains Recruiting Class Woes
I spoke to a USC coach who offered a novel theory on why the Trojans’ recruiting class is not rated higher.
USC has been criticized for not doing better although it expects to get a commitment on Saturday from Mater Dei wide receiver Bru McCoy.
“We didn’t want some of the people who could have made this class a lot higher ranked,” the coach said.
The coach, who obviously does not want to be identified, mentioned Oaks Christian defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux as an example of a player USC backed off. Thibodeaux was rated one of the top 10 players in the nation and signed with Oregon.
The coach also claimed USC backed off five-star cornerback Chris Steele, who was committed to USC and will announce his final choice on Saturday.
Neither “fit” with what the coaches want going forward at USC, the coach said.
Is this just sour grapes? Maybe. Who would turn down a five-star if they really wanted to come?
But I’m just giving you an idea of the spin emerging from the McKay Center.
JOHN JACKSON UPDATE
Just a quick word since many have asked. I’m told John Jackson has shown slight improvement as he recovers from a stroke but is still in the hospital. Everything I hear indicates it was a major stroke and will require a long recovery.
John is a great guy and everyone who knows him is praying for him.
