Wednesday Whispers: Why Clay Helton Can't Hire A Strength Coach Quicker

It’s been about six weeks since Ivan Lewis resigned as USC strength coach and went to the Seattle Seahawks.

Why has it taken Clay Helton so long to replace Lewis especially when January and February are key months for strength training?

Because any good strength coach knows it is probably a one-year job if Helton gets fired.

Cal strength coach Torre Becton turned it down for that reason, according to sources. No one wants to leave their job for 12 months or less.

This is part of the dysfunction of USC right now. No one trusts Lynn Swann or Helton.

Ironically, USC assistant strength coach Keith Belton, who is currently in charge and was head strength coach at UNLV, was told by Helton he will not get the job.

So Helton will slow roll hiring a strength coach. Maybe he will hire someone this week. If that person is willing to take a job for a year.
