Helton reviews USC’s signing day
Clay Helton introduced 26 of USC’s 27 2019 commitments as signees on Wednesday, including seven new prospects who had just put pen to paper for the Trojans that day. The embattled head coach also laid out his strategy for the last few months of USC recruiting, which was mostly focused around the defensive backfield.
“When we came into this signing period, we really felt there was a desperate need to continue searching for defensive backs,” Helton said. “We had lost seven defensive backs off of last year’s roster. Basically the entire starting secondary with the possibility of losing another senior after this season. That was 8 total DBs in a two year time.
“So we felt like there was a great need at that position so we continued to garter the position, adding Dorian Hewitt from Texas, Kaulana Makaula from Hawaii, Adonis Otey from Tennessee and Jaydon Williams and Jaylen Watson. Those are five guys that make us not only deep by also very talented in a very short amount of time.
“We were also able to garner a tremendous outside linebacker after losing Uchenna Nwosu and Porter Gustin. We were looking for a special person and in Tuasivi Nomura. A young man out of Centennial HS, he is that Tasmanian Devil. He reminds us of Uchenna who was that safety, he moved down to outside linebacker this year and was a young man who was an extreme talent and has a very bright future. And then finally, when you’re getting ready to go to the offense that Graham runs, you know you need special athletes to help run that offense and to be able to get Kyle Ford, who I think is dynamic at what he does, he reminds me of a gentleman that was with us here today and on campus in JuJu Smith (-Schuster.) The physicality at the position that Kyle brings, we can’t wait to use.
“As for this class, I’m loving it, as people, as students and as athletes. 22 of the 26 are from the West Coast, from the states of California, Hawaii, Arizona and Washington. 16 of those are from right here in our own backyard of Southern California, 16 of those 22. Out of those 26 players, three are national recruits, from Texas, Florida and Tennessee and one international recruit from Australia.”
The next significant date for Trojan fans to know is March 5, which is the start of spring practice.
