Helton: We signed 26 but we have space left
Clay Helton’s USC Trojans seemed nearly finished with recruiting way back in December. After the early signing period, USC already held letters of intent from 19 different prospects.
The coaches went back to work anyway to gather even more commitments. The result was seven more signed letters faxed in on February 6.
A class of 26 is a fairly large recruiting class. But the USC head coach insists it could get even larger.
It’s necessary to mention Orem, Utah HS WR Puka Nacua remains unsigned and is currently committed to the Trojans. He could easily sign the 27th letter of intent faxed through to Heritage Hall.
But Helton says he’s looking to make additions outside of what could come from that explosive playmaker.
“We signed 26 today and we actually left some space to be able to garter young men if needed,” Helton said at his signing day press conference. “One of the things that has happened with the portal is there are not only unsigned players but gentlemen looking for homes. I remember how important (former Utah DT) Stevie Tu’ikolovatu was when we acquired him in the summer. We do have space left, we have 26 in these two signing periods but we do have space left if needed.”
