Wednesday Whispers: An Awkward Early Moment For Clay Helton
I spoke to a couple parents who went to Tuesday’s opening spring practice and they had an interesting observation: USC coach Clay Helton seemed a little out of place, trying to figure out what to do.
Helton is supposed to be overseeing the entire program and monitoring mistakes such as penalties.
But instead, parents noticed he seemed preoccupied with the offense, which is where he usually spent all this time.
This suggests it will be take some time for him to make a full transition.
More worrisome, Helton said he would “rely heavily on input” from offensive coordinator Graham Harrell to pick the starting QB?
The team prefers Helton stay out of the decision. The fans want Helton to stay out of it.
If he merely listens to Harrell and then does what he wants (start JT Daniels), it will be an unwelcome move within the team.
Meanwhile, I hear cornerback Greg Johnson met with Helton and is leaning toward returning to the team.
