Tuesday Whispers: USC Rank-And-File Employees Concerned
I’ve spoken to several USC athletic dept. employees who work on the administrative side in the past two weeks for an assessment on the current atmosphere.
And they have offered some concerns: The first thing I hear is worries over football ticket sales for next season. Everyone knows attendance will be down. Some were stunned at how few fans attended the USC spring showcase, which could not even sell out the 3,000-seat track stadium. And the event was free!
They also believe donations will be down because of the myriad scandals and 5-7 football season that was not helped by Clay Helton returning.
“We have a lot of burdens when we ask donors for a contribution,” a development official said. “There are a lot of reasons for people to be upset.”
When you add in that Pac-12 Network revenues are not meeting projections, USC could face some budget tightening.
There is a sliver of hope for employees: They believe athletic director Lynn Swann might start working more now that his image is under the microscope.
Swann did not go to the Masters last weekend and was on campus Monday. They know some of this is probably to impress new president Carol Folt but they will take anything they can get from Swann at this point.
