Monday Whispers: Did Graham Harrell Tip His Hand In QB Competition?
Who will start at quarterback for USC depends on who you ask?
USC coach Clay Helton obviously prefers JT Daniels over the other candidates. But will Graham Harrell allow Helton to potentially ruin his reputation by overruling him on who starts?
Opinions vary on who should start. One beat writer said Daniels was winning by a mile last week. Another said Matt Fink was having the best spring. I have always championed Jack Sears.
But when I asked a USC coach Sunday, I was a little surprised how emphatic he spoke about what Harrell thinks.
“Harrell was raving about Jack Sears after the scrimmage,” the coach said. “The fans will focus on his interception to Drake Jackson but he has the athletic ability that (Harrell) likes for the offense. Don’t be surprised if Sears is the guy..”
Neither Helton nor Harrell have given any indication Sears might be the guy and most of the media has written him off (the same beat writer that said Fink was No. 1 said Sears was No. 4 this spring).
So Harrell is either masking his feelings or the way he felt Saturday was temporary. But it is interesting how coaches act privately and that’s why I try to find out these things for those of you who subscribe.
