Thursday Whispers: Lynn Swann's Makeover?
Lynn Swann was in high-profile mode at the USC-UCLA track meet Sunday.
For a change, he wanted to be seen in public. He also has been seen on campus speaking to visiting high school students outside Heritage Hall.
Some inside the athletic dept. view this as a campaign to look more engaged and impress new president Carol Folt.
Swann got off to a poor start with Folt when he attended an autograph show in March the same weekend as a Board of Trustees retreat. He then went to the Masters with several USC women’s golfers the week before the actual tournament. Swann wanted to stay for the actual Masters, sources tell me, but was told Folt would frown upon him staying so soon after his autograph appearance.
Swann might think highly of himself but he does not want to removed as athletic director. He wants to stay in the job for 6-7 more years and then retire.
But there is increasing pressure on him. The investigation into the college admissions scandal has many people nervous and puts his leadership in poor light. Plus there is the football program’s struggles under Clay Helton.
Everything Swann does now can be scrutinized by Folt. So he is trying to at least keep up appearances for now.
