Tuesday Whispers: Athletic Dept. Discontent Increases
Many of the rank-and-file members within the athletic dept. are unhappy with some recent developments.
They did not like being told their previously free tickets to USC football games would now include the personal-seat fee. That could mean 2 “free” seats would cost $1,000.
Some members were also stunned that senior associate athletic director Steve Lopes said he might schedule an FCS team in the future.
“Do these guys realize how many fans are not renewing their tickets and then they read that USC might play an FCS team,” one long-time employee said. “That’s not how you generate excitement or confidence.”
They also want to know if Lynn Swann is going to take a hands-on approach with the baseball program or toss it off to Lopes to handle whether Coach Dan Hubbs returns?
Swann’s lack of engagement affects morale within the dept. He is not afraid to write up employees for minor things despite the fact he is rarely around and jetted off to an autograph on the busiest weekend of the year for USC Athletics in late March.
“No one knows what he does,” an employee said. “It seems hypocritical when he writes up people for little offences.”
