Wednesday Whispers: Football Initiative Falls Flat
An administrator at USC tells me the reaction to Steve Lopes saying he might schedule games against FCS opponents has prompted a backlash from boosters and fans.
“They knew there would be opposition but the blowback this week even surprised them,” the administrator said. “They leaked this as a trial balloon because Lopes has already identified teams he wants to schedule. But the reaction’s been completely negative.
“They still might do it because they want to do it. But they know it is even more unpopular than originally expected.”
What does Lynn Swann think? He’s been in Fayetteville, Ark., this week with the women’s golf team at the NCAA championships so no one has spoken to him about it.
Some sources don’t think he cares anyways so it is entirely up to Lopes whether USC actually plays an FCS team. Stay tuned.
