Tuesday Whispers: Can USC Flip Chris Steele?

Tuesday Whispers: Can USC Flip Chris Steele?

USC is putting a full-court press on Chris Steele to convince the cornerback to flip his commitment from Oregon to USC.

Steele visited USC on Monday and met with the coaches. His visit came on the heels of a trip to Oregon last weekend. Wide receiver Bru McCoy is also trying to get Steele to change his commitment.

The key for Steele could be how he feels about new defensive backs coach Greg Burns.

Burns didn’t do much during his first stint and Pete Carroll was thrilled that he fooled Monte Kiffin into hiring him at Tampa Bay.

But time makes people forget all this and now Burns is viewed as a “key part” of the glory days at USC. Whatever works for recruiting, I guess.

Oregon wants Steele to decide this week, according to sources.

  • Meanwhile, I hear USC has started to contact candidates for the baseball job. UC Santa Barbara coach Andrew Checketts and TCU assistant coach Bill Mosiello are among the frontrunners.

  • Another name emerged today: Baylor coach Steve Rodriguez, who used to coach at Pepperdine. Rodriguez makes at Baylor than previous USC coach Dan Hubbs. And his wife is believed to enjoy living in Waco, Texas. Go figure.
