Tuesday Whispers: Notes From Training Camp
We hear a USC mega-booster says Lynn Swann doesn’t even listen to him anymore. If that’s true, it is hard to figure out who Swann listens to these days.
We continue to hear that USC’s new coaches do not really hang out with the holdover coaches from last season. In particular, no one wants to be around John Baxter.
USC’s defensive backs are believed to be improving under new assistant coach Greg Burns, who worked at USC under Pete Carroll. But no one says they are improving enough to be a team strength.
Clay Helton held a staff party before training camp and invited former director of security Rick Carr, who was let go at the end of June. Carr did not attend.
USC’s running backs are wondering where they fit into the rotation. Stephen Carr believes he was in the doghouse last year and is trying to break out during training camp. Markese Stepp believes he should have played last season. Vavae Malepeai thinks his role should have been bigger. And freshman Kenan Christon is now in the mix. It will provide a dilemma for Helton.
