Tuesday Whispers: Was Lynn Swann Blindsided?

Tuesday Whispers: Was Lynn Swann Blindsided?

An athletic dept. source tells me Lynn Swann was summoned to president Carol Folt’s office on Monday with no idea he was about to be fired.

“He spent time with her at the game Saturday night and there was no indication he was going to be fired,” the source said.

The meeting with Folt was not exactly harmonious. Swann was not offered any type of cushy position to remain at USC (like Max Nikias or Michael Quick) and did not even have a comment in the statement announcing his resignation.

When Provost Michael Quick and Senior Vice President for Legal Affairs and Professionalism Carol Mauch Amir were removed in the spring, each was allowed to provide a public statement.

Folt gave Swann his marching orders and that was that.

If Swann got the axe, Folt also delivered a brush back pitch to Steve Lopes, who is believed to be the highest-paid No. 2 in the country.

Lopes was not made the interim A.D. That was given to Dave Roberts. So Lopes was effectively told his chances of becoming athletic director are nil.
