Wednesday Whispers: Why Did A Player Have To Leave To Flourish?
How is it that former USC defensive end Oluwole Betiku leads the nation in sacks (7) and tackles for loss (10.5) but he could not see the field with the Trojans?
A USC insider who works in the McKay Center thinks Betiku’s problem at USC was coaches were not really qualified.
“Who was coaching him? It was mostly Clancy Pendergast,” the insider said. “He never played football. One time, I went to a Dallas Cowboys practice when Clancy was an assistant there and Mike Zimmer kicked him off the field because of the way he ran a drill. I’m not sure of his specialty.
“Was Johnny Nansen coaching him? He’s bounced around to almost every position in his career.”
USC has hired Paul Perrier as deputy athletic director.
He was senior associate athletic director at Rutgers but previously worked in compliance at USC, where he worked with interim A.D. Dave Roberts.
So even though Roberts is an interim, he is making hires.
This is actually a positive hire. Perrier was respected within the athletic dept. and with his compliance background won't be beholden to the whims of donors/coaches, like so many of the long-timers that have held the dept. hostage for decades.
Now USC just needs to hire an A.D. with no USC ties.
