Wednesday Whispers: Behind The Scenes
I hear USC tailback Markese Stepp was furious after the Fresno State game.
Stepp was arguably the best tailback of training camp and then did not get a single carry vs. Fresno State.
Vavae Malepeai and Stephen Carr got all the carries. They gained nearly 200 yards together. But when USC could not convert on third-and-1 late in the game, it seemed like a perfect time for the 230-pound Stepp.
As of this morning, USC had not reached out to Jack Sears. I hear Sears does not want to return. But I think it is also true that Clay Helton does not want Sears either. For whatever reason, Helton views Sears as some type of threat.
A USC assistant coach said many of the coaches are fed up with John Baxter’s sloppy special teams and problems getting the right players on the field. It’s widely known within the football offices that the new assistant coaches prefer to have as few dealings as possible with Baxter.
